As a 40-something-year-old father of two, I’m constantly on the lookout for family-friendly travel destinations that strike the perfect balance between adventure, relaxation, and quality time together. My wife and I have always shared a love for exploring Wisconsin's diverse landscapes, and Door County has firmly established itself as one of our favorite places to visit. From stunning natural parks to unique experiences like trolley tours and incredible local cuisine, Door County has everything a family could ask for. Here’s a look at some of our most cherished memories and recommendations for making the most of this remarkable region.
Peninsula State Park: A Natural Treasure
No trip to Door County would be complete without a visit to Peninsula State Park. Spanning over 3,700 acres along Green Bay, this park is an outdoor paradise for families. Our kids’ eyes light up every time we roll into the park, and it’s easy to see why—it’s a haven for hiking, biking, and even some lighthearted beach fun.

One of our favorite activities here is tackling the park’s Eagle Trail, a moderately challenging hike with breathtaking views of the cliffs and shoreline. We’ve marveled at limestone formations and taken countless family photos overlooking the bay. It’s a mix of adventure and serenity, perfect for family bonding.
For cycling enthusiasts, the Sunset Trail is a must. This 9-mile loop winds through forests and along the waterfront. Renting bikes in Fish Creek and pedaling through the park has become a cherished tradition. We usually end the ride with a picnic near Nicolet Beach, where the kids can splash in the water while my wife and I soak in the picturesque scenery. The beach does get busy though, so either get there early to claim a spot in the sand, or wait until evening.
And if you’re looking for a unique perspective, don’t miss the Eagle Tower, a recently reconstructed observation tower with an accessible ramp. Standing at the top, gazing out over the forest canopy and Green Bay, is nothing short of magical.
Whitefish Dunes State Park: Beachside Bliss in Door County
Discovering the wonders of Door County, Wisconsin should be an adventure. A short drive from Peninsula State Park brings you to another gem: Whitefish Dunes State Park. This park is home to the largest sand dunes on the western shore of Lake Michigan, and it’s a fantastic spot for families who love both nature and the beach.
Our kids adore running up and down the dunes, giggling as they race each other to the top. Meanwhile, my wife and I enjoy walking along the shoreline, taking in the cool breeze and the soothing sound of waves lapping against the sand. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, and you can truly appreciate the beauty of Wisconsin’s natural landscapes.
One highlight of Whitefish Dunes is the Black Trail, a peaceful loop that leads you through dense forest and along a quieter section of the beach. It’s less crowded than other parts of the park, making it perfect for families looking to escape the hustle and bustle. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot some wildlife; we’ve seen deer, foxes, and a variety of birds on our walks.
The last time we were there, a park ranger was stationed down by the beach, handing out kites for kids to fly. It was a wonderful sight to see with all of the colorful kites floating through the air above Lake Michigan's waves. It’s these kinds of experiences that make Whitefish Dunes more than just a beach—it’s an educational adventure wrapped in natural beauty.
All Aboard the Door County Trolley
For a memorable way to explore Door County, hop on the iconic Door County Trolley. This experience has become a family tradition, blending history, fun, and convenience.
We first tried the scenic tour, which includes stops at historic lighthouses and picturesque overlooks. The kids were riveted by tales of shipwrecks and local legends, while my wife and I appreciated the leisurely pace and chance to enjoy the views. The trolley is also a great way to discover hidden gems you might otherwise miss. Our tour guide, Mike, was a wonderful person. A local who had spent most of his life in Door County, he knew everything there was to know about the area.
As the kids grow older, we’re eyeing the Ghost Tour of Door County, which promises a mix of history and spine-tingling stories. For now, though, the daytime tours are just right for our crew.
Savoring Door County’s Culinary Delights
After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than sitting down to a delicious meal—and Door County’s food scene never disappoints. From casual cafes to iconic eateries, the region is brimming with culinary gems.
One of our absolute favorites is Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant in Sister Bay. This isn’t just a meal; it’s an experience. Where else can you enjoy mouthwatering Swedish pancakes with lingonberries while watching goats graze on the restaurant’s grass-covered roof? Our kids love the goats almost as much as the food, and we always make it a point to snap a family photo by the quirky building.
For a more casual meal, we often head to Wilson’s Restaurant & Ice Cream Parlor in Ephraim. This nostalgic spot serves up hearty burgers, creamy malts, and homemade ice cream. The kids adore the old-fashioned jukebox, and the retro vibe makes it feel like stepping back in time.
Seafood lovers won’t want to miss a traditional Door County fish boil, a communal dining experience that’s as entertaining as it is delicious. Watching the boil master toss kerosene on the fire and seeing the pot of whitefish, potatoes, and onions erupt in flames is a thrill for the kids. And the tender, flaky fish served with melted butter is simply divine.
Door County’s Wineries: A Taste of Local Elegance
Hey, let's also talk about the wine scene. While Door County is a haven for family fun, it also caters to adults looking to unwind. My wife and I make it a point to explore the area’s exceptional wineries when visiting. It’s a relaxing way to experience the local culture and indulge in world-class wines.
Our first stop when entering Door County is Door 44 Winery in Sturgeon Bay. The winery is known for its award-winning wines made from cold-climate grapes, which thrive in Wisconsin’s unique terroir. My wife and I love sampling the “Frozen Tundra” series, particularly the white blend for its crisp, refreshing taste. With its inviting atmosphere, Door 44 is a perfect way to kick off any Door County trip.
Next on the list is Stone’s Throw Winery, tucked away in Baileys Harbor. This winery has an old-world charm, transporting you straight to Tuscany with its architecture and ambiance. Their Italian-style wines are a treat, and we’ve spent many relaxing afternoons on their patio, sipping a glass of Dolcetto or Pinot Grigio. They also have some very unique wines, like lemon. Yep. Lemon. The kids enjoy their fresh, locally sourced non-alcoholic options and the beautiful grounds which have plenty of outdoor games set up, which make it easy to keep them entertained while we enjoy the wine.
Another favorite is Simon Creek Vineyard & Winery, located in the heart of Door County. The scenic drive alone is worth the trip, but the winery itself is a treasure. Their live music events on the patio create a lively yet relaxing atmosphere, and the “Untouchable Red” wine is a personal favorite. The kids often bring books or sketch pads to enjoy while we soak in the tranquil surroundings and fantastic wine.
These wineries offer a great way to balance family adventures with a little adult indulgence. Plus, many have outdoor spaces where kids can play or relax, making them surprisingly family-friendly.
Creating Lasting Memories
For my wife and me, Door County isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a space where our family grows closer. Whether we’re hiking rugged trails, playing on sun-soaked beaches, or savoring a meal together, every moment feels like a step into timeless memories.
Our kids love the mix of adventure, nature, and unique activities, while we appreciate the chance to unwind and share new experiences with them. As we’ve discovered, Door County isn’t just a destination—it’s a place where the bonds of family grow stronger. If you’re planning your next Wisconsin getaway, don’t hesitate to make Door County your choice. From its breathtaking parks to its delightful wineries and beyond, the wonders of Door County are here for you, waiting to be explored.
