The more researchers look, the harder it becomes to argue that language, culture, and grief are uniquely human. Sperm whales communicate with individual acoustic signatures that function like names. Forest Whales visited Juneau, Wisconsin, where 200 people showed up in a town of 2,000. My niece River joined for the first time and watched a boy nearly fall backwards when he realized he was holding a real T. rex jaw. Near the end of the day, four kids came back through Clara a second time. When I quizzed them, they fired every fact right back at me.

Clara didn't always have a name. That changed in February, when Harper, age 7, from Edgerton won a naming contest through the Prairie Lakes Library System. Last week Forest Whales traveled over 1,100 miles across Wisconsin, bringing Clara the whale to four libraries and over 2,500 people. One third of Rio showed up. A little girl in Shullsburg came back three times. And inside the whale, sperm whales named their babies and a 200-year-old bowhead stopped everyone cold.
