How to Bring Whale Conservation and Ocean Science to Your Wisconsin Community

Wisconsin has no ocean. We have lakes, rivers, and more shoreline than most people realize, but the nearest saltwater is roughly a thousand miles away in any direction. And yet, when a 56-foot gray whale named Clara shows up in a school gymnasium in Wausau or a library in Burlington, something happens that I did not fully anticipate when I started this work.

Not every kid. But enough of them. It's unprompted, instinctive, with the kind of unself-conscious affection that children reserve for things that feel alive. Clara is made of reinforced nylon and filled with air. She does not have a heartbeat. But she has a name, and it turns out that is enough.

I have been thinking about that a lot lately. About what it means that a child in a landlocked state, who has never seen an ocean, will walk up to a 56-foot inflatable whale and wrap their arms around her nose. About what that moment tells us about kids, about curiosity, and about what is at stake for the animals we rarely think about because we never see them.


Gray Whales Are in Trouble

The eastern Pacific gray whale population, the same species as Clara, has been declining for several years. Scientists are alarmed. Strandings are up. Body condition is deteriorating. The animals are arriving at their feeding grounds thinner than they should be, which suggests the Arctic ecosystem they depend on is changing faster than they can adapt.

This is not a distant problem. It is happening now, to a species that was once considered a conservation success story. Gray whales recovered from near-extinction in the 20th century thanks to protections that worked. Now those gains are threatened by warming oceans, shifting prey distributions, and a changing Arctic.

Most Wisconsin kids have never heard of a gray whale. Most adults haven't either.

That is exactly why it matters to bring one here.


What an Inflatable Whale Model Does That Nothing Else Can

There is a version of whale conservation education that involves a poster on a wall. There is another version that involves a video on a screen. Both have their place. Neither creates the moment I am describing.

When students walk inside Clara, when they stand in her belly and look around and realize they are inside something that actually exists in the world, an animal that breathes air and nurses its young and migrates thousands of miles every year, something shifts. The scale of it registers physically. You cannot get that from a poster.

The hands-on component deepens it further. Holding a sperm whale tooth. Running a finger along the barnacle graphic on Clara's skin. Touching a vertebra from a humpback whale that is bigger than their head. These are tactile moments that anchor information in a way that reading never does. The research on experiential learning is consistent on this point: students retain more, engage more deeply, and develop stronger emotional connections to content when they experience it physically.

I sometimes tell community crowds that you can actually purchase whale milk online. That somewhere, right now, someone is milking a beluga whale. I watch the faces. Every nose in the room turns up at once. Every brow furrows. It is the most reliably disgusted reaction I can produce in a crowd of any age.

But here is the thing: nobody forgets it. That scrunch-faced moment of "wait, what?" is exactly how curiosity works. It starts with something that surprises you, something that doesn't fit the picture you already had. Then you start asking questions. Then you start caring about the answers.


That is conservation education. Not a lecture. A feeling.


How to Arrange a Whale Conservation Event for Your Wisconsin Community

If you are a library director, a PTO president, a school principal, or a community event organizer wondering how to bring ocean science to your corner of Wisconsin, here is what it actually looks like in practice.

A Forest Whales community event centers on Clara. She inflates in a gymnasium, a library event space, or any large indoor venue with adequate ceiling clearance. Around her, tables display hands-on specimens: Megalodon teeth, whale bones, fossil casts, and a science educator is standing there to discuss gray whale biology, migration, and conservation. Visitors rotate through at their own pace. Families come together. Kids who have been inside Clara bring their parents back in and give them the tour.

The Prairie Lakes Library System in southern Wisconsin ran six of these events this past spring across communities including Burlington, Edgerton, Elkhorn, Evansville, and Union Grove. More than 2,000 community members attended. In Burlington alone, 830 people showed up on a Saturday morning and waited over an hour in line.

They were not waiting for a lecture about conservation statistics. They were waiting to walk inside a whale.



The Benefits of Hands-On Ocean Science Programs

For schools specifically, the research case for experiential science programming is strong. Students who engage physically with scientific content show higher retention, greater curiosity, and stronger motivation to learn more. For a topic like ocean ecosystems, which can feel abstract and irrelevant to a kid in central Wisconsin, the physical presence of a life-size whale model closes the distance between the classroom and the concept.

Forest Whales programs are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and cover whale anatomy and adaptation, ocean ecosystems and food chains, the fossil record and deep time, human impact on marine environments, and the connections between ocean health and the broader natural world. Every program includes teacher guides and classroom follow-up materials so the learning extends beyond the assembly day.

But the number that stays with me is not a research statistic. It is the kid in Shawano who asked if Clara might have a tummy ache. It is the boy in Jefferson who started dancing when he got the answer right. It is every child who has walked up to a gray whale's nose and, without anyone telling them to, wrapped their arms around it.

Those kids are going to grow up. Some of them are going to remember the day the whale came to their town.


A few of them are going to become the people who decide what happens to gray whales.


...That seems worth a gymnasium and a Saturday morning.
